next driver is available you don't know what's happening you're disorientated cuz you have as sleep so let's begin
this journey exposing the scam cities of Southeast Asia a dark reality that is
growing extremely fast and needs to be stopped as soon as possible let's
begin good morning guys we're going to start this journey from right here Bangkok Thailand my motorbike is ready
and we are going to ride 500 km North to the city of myot in my thought we have
Michelle waiting for us and she's going to explain us everything about the scam cities and all the human trafficking
that is happening around that area there are a lot of issues in this side of Southeast Asia and we are going to
expose them in this video so let's go okay the bike is ready we can start
the road
trip so I left Bangkok and I started my job Journey towards myot myot is a town
in the northwest of Thailand right at the border with Myanmar and that's where thousands of people are trafficked each
year they enter Thailand and then they traffic into Myanmar where they become slaves but we are going to learn more
about this very soon I've been to my S before but I had no idea that this human trafficking was happening but nowadays
it's becoming more and more common is actually in the news in Thailand almost every week so I really wanted to learn
more and invest vestigate because on the surface you don't see anything but behind the scenes there are a lot of
dark things happening so guys I stopped One Night in naona one because man my
Sal is pretty far from Bangkok so I could not make it in just one day but you know what's crazy this seems like
made up or fake but it's actually true it just happened last night this is the
news from cow English and they are saying that last night 39 foreigners
flee scammer gang across MO River to Thailand so 39 foreigners were able to
escape from the scam City last night run away from Myanmar cross the river and Escape into Thailand and then the Thai
police found them and rescu them and now they are safe in Thailand 39 of them I'm reading the news and I'm like shocked
it's like I cannot believe I'm going there right now and just last night 39 people escaped let's continue the road
trip and let's go to my Sal southeast Asia it's an incredible
part of the world it's actually my favorite part of the world that's why I live here especially Thailand is a very
special place people are kind humble most of them are Buddhist they really have a good heart they don't really
steal they don't harm they don't hurt you and it's also a very safe place but unfortunately it's a region of the world
where there is also a lot of poverty a lot of financial struggles and lack of opportunities that's why a lot of dark
things are happening here in Southeast Asia a lot of abuse human trafficking sex trafficking scams drug trafficking
child abuse and so much more most of the times Behind these dark activities there are criminals and Mafia groups and the
reason is simple there are a lot of money to be made these illegal and dark activities they generate billions of
dollars each year so we almost arrived to my thought the Myanmar border is just
over there between Thailand and Myanmar as you can see this is a beautiful area incredible nature but unfortunately a
lot of uh sketchy and dark things are happening around around
here I decided to make this video because this is a topic very close to my heart because of my experience that I
had in 2011 in Dubai I was not human trafficked but still my passport was
kept and I was basically working between 12 and 16 hours per day for just a little salary of €400 per month and I
know some people in Dubai that had way worse condition than me they kept their passport they were forced to work there
for just a little size I made a video about my experience in Dubai it's actually the most popular video on my
channel I'll put the link down below if you want to check it out because there I share my entire story here at the border
between Thailand and Myanmar is way worse than my experience in Dubai we're going to learn about it very soon as
soon as we arrive there but yeah that's the reason why this topic and this issues are close to my heart because of
my experience in Dubai all right let's continue because we are almost in my S
[Music] when you get closer to myot town at the
border with myamar you will find a lot of police check actually every few kilometers the police will stop you will
check you will ask you where are you going what are you doing here especially if you are with a car because as we will
learn very soon in this video a lot of victims are trafficked from Thailand into myamar inside private cars and
that's why police carefully check each and every car so after two days of riding I arrived in my S when you cruise
around myot you have no idea about what is happening because it's just a little Border Town with like temples with the
market with a shopping mall it's very quiet very chill very Thai style very Sabai Sabai and you will never think
that behind the scene a lot of these things are happening so it was finally time to meet Michelle she runs this
organization which is called Global alms foundation and she's doing an incredible job of helping the victims of human
trafficking inside the scam cities of Myanmar typically uh someone who wants
to work overseas would look for a job online whether that's through social
media or they might go through a recruitment agency or be contacted by a recruiter so they would apply for the
job and generally they just have like the brief details like how much the
salary is per month um the location and then what it is like they would do so
then they organize an interview so let's stop for a second the interview and let me show you what I find because after
she told me all of these things I went on Facebook and I tried to actually look for a job and it was shocking to see
that this scammers they post job openings all across social media so what Michelle is telling us it's happening
right now and you can check for yourself you can go online on Facebook you can start to look for a job and I'm pretty
sure that you will find some job openings in my S it was shocking to actually see it with my own eyes on
Facebook um with the larger scamming companies that they would have a HR department that would coordinate all of
that so then they're having an interview with like the HR manager with their direct line manager and maybe a regional
operations manager so it's a panel and they would have like two or three interviews if they pass those sometimes
they have to do a competency test for uh English Reading Writing and spelling
with the smaller scamming companies they generally advertise on social media
Tik Tok Telegram and the position usually is misleading yes Logistics
officer or a hotel manager or a school teacher or a driver or something
practical right that you think oh yeah this would be great um the salary is normally it's a decent salary but it's
normally a little bit more than what you would actually think you would get so
it's very lucrative for people and it entices them to come faster right even if they do all their due diligence and
check online the company online is legit HR is legit the contract looks
legitimate sign your contract and then you fly all the way to saan PM airport
in Bangkok they pay the ticket they pay your ticket your Visa sometimes they'll make you pay your visa and say that your
company will reimburse you when you arrive which does happen um but generally everything's coordinated for
you and there is a driver waiting it's Swan airport with a little sign with your name on it right so it all it looks
official you go and meet the driver you get into the van sometimes you'll stay
One Night in Bangkok sometimes they'll take you straight to massot um if they've told you the job is in Bangkok
there's always a reason for you going to mesot cuz no one ever wants to come here it's not a tourist destination so it's
like Regional headquarters is there and you the manager is there at the moment so you need to go there meet the manager and we'll bring you back to make there's
always a reason right
[Music]
and here comes the really dark and scary part of the story what is happening from now on is really terrifying so anyway
you travel to Bangkok they'll put you in a hotel for the night and then they'll say we just need to coordinate your Visa
because they tell people you can come in on a tourist visa and we'll change it over to a working Visa which you can
legally do so companies promise to do that they take your passport and then you never see it
[Music] again in the middle of the night there's normally a knock on the door and you're
then scrambling to pack your bags cuz your next driver is available you don't know what's happening you're disorientated cuz you're half asleep
you're funneled into a car and then you are driven around and around and around for hours so you think you're actually
driving for for a really long time but you're actually just circling and going through different parts of massot the
scamming compounds are only about 5Ks from here it's not far the furthest one away I think is 40 minutes so but if
you're driving around for 2 and 1/ half hours is to disorientate you you might change cars two or three times um by
this stage everybody is panicking and knows that something is wrong they just don't know what and they can't speak tie
and the driver doesn't communicate with them they're told to shut up and sit down and the driver or the escort is
generally armed so there's a lot of fear and coercion and control
happening eventually they get down to the river and they're forced to get into a boat and to cross the river and then
they're transferred into a compound during that process there's normally armed soldiers and they're from the
ethnic armed groups that are controlling those Crossings so let's stop again the conversation with Michelle and let's go
to see with our own eyes how these scam cities are I asked Michelle to give me
the directions where I can see the scam cities and I took my motorbike and I went there to see with my own eyes and I
couldn't believe what I was seeing because they're actually extremely close to the tie border and everything she was
describing it became extremely
real all right guys we just made it to one of the biggest uh scam compounds and
cities here it was just a 10 minutes ride from my city and here is the border
between Thailand and myamar and you can see one of the biggest scam City man this place is huge it's a massive
compound made of like different buildings some of them I can see they're under construction there are like high
walls and security everywhere so this one here is Thailand there is this little river and over there is already
Myanmar actually I can see that some secur is looking at me from this side
[Music]
you can see how many buildings here and this is just the external side inside is a massive City I have Goosebumps right
now just uh looking at this and thinking that inside there are like thousands of people trapped without passport without
cell phone forced to scam people receiving violence every day and and they cannot leave man they're trapped
here forced to work their family is away and uh
man my my heart breaks for
them I'm very sensitive to this topic because I know how it feels I mean when
I was in Dubai they kept my passport but to be honest it's nothing compared to this I could always leave I was not
forced to scam people I was not trapped there I could have escaped if I wanted to but for these people man is 100 times
harsher and uh I really I really feel for them this one guys is one of the illegal entrances where they bring the
people from Thailand to Myanmar they just access from there and here as you can see they Clos so you cannot see
[Music]
anything this one guys is another place where they do the illegal Crossing so
this is Thailand we just crossed the river over there and and you arrive to Myanmar and the scum City they actually
starts from here starting from here is the KK Park which is one of the biggest uh uh compound and scam cities of
Myanmar and you see that boat there that's one of the boat that they used to just cross the the river usually they do
the crossing at night time when uh nobody see you can see this boat here crazy no
that you can see the people living there such a different world Thailand from y
different laws different government different political situation honestly I'm tempted to Flat a drone here as well
but I might get completely shut down from the antennas here from the military
as well take
off so they get into the compound even if they challenge their agent or their new boss
when they get into the compound hey I applied for this job like like what's going on why am I here most of the time
they don't know they've actually crossed from Thailand into Myanmar I didn't even know no they're not sure so unless you
know like you are familiar with geography which nowadays not many people
are or you think I have to check my GPS they just think they're going into a
remote part of Thailand they don't actually realize they're crossing a border there's no big sign saying hey
you are now leaving Thailand because they go through um River Crossings right it's not through the official Bridgeway
they get into these compounds and even if they challenge hey why am I here I was applied for this job blah blah blah
blah blah they're told to shut up you you're here to scam now they put in their room sometimes they have to report
to work the same day and generally with the scamming jobs they are targeting um
Western count so they're working at night if they're they're employed by a company who's targeting countries in
Asia you're generally operating on China time but you're working 17 to 18 hour
days it's very long days so the different scams that you have are the most popular is romance scam where
you're given a script to learn and you have to pretend to be somebody else so
you might be a man or a woman and then your whole goal is to
find contacts online whether it's through social medias or dating apps and
to take that conversation start a conversation with someone and take that conversation off the app and into
WhatsApp and then once that that happens then that is that contact is handed over
to another person and it goes to the next team and then they continue the
relationship and they try and develop a deep connection with someone and the
whole aim is there to glean money off them to trick them into investing into
fake Investments so then they can steal their money um there's other scams like real
estate scams and then also online shopping but that's more particular for
different countries the most popular is romance scam because it's the easiest one what really shocked me is that all
of this is really new it just started few years ago so KK Park was the first
compound along this stretch of border to be built and it was 2019 it started end
of 2019 2020 so it's recent yeah it's very recent they started trafficking people in end of 2020 early 2021 we've
had Force criminality around for years but Force scamming is a new type of
exploitation yeah and they keep building and keep expanding every compound has ongoing construction right now wow
[Music]
woo so my drone lost the GPS and started to go like randomly around and I couldn't control it anymore I almost
crashed it inside a tree and then I don't know how but somehow I was able to just bring it back and it landed in the
middle of a field here but Michelle was telling that so many people lost their drone or they crash it because of this
GPS interferences they don't want people to fly the Drone [Music]
here a typical day in a compound would be so you wake up in the afternoon then
you work all night and if you don't reach your scamming Target so each team
generally has a monthly Target some depending on the compound have weekly targets like Financial targets they have
to meet or there's at times where they might have to get 30 numbers from Tik Tok or
Instagram if they don't meet that quota then they have to stay at work until they get those numbers or you get
physical punishments depending on the compound physical punishments can be anything from 100 duck walks or 200
push-ups or maybe a th squats to being beaten with metal pipes and tasered
um there are some more extreme compounds that will lock you up chain you up in a dark room and beat you randomly for
several days deny you food they give you water so you don't die I'm taking this risk because I already don't have that
much of time people getting getting
tortured raped the Chinese can enter in any time
and kill me it's simple as that some
will uh assault and rape you depending on where you are men or women it's not
just women um so there's a lot of different ways that people are
inflicting harm on others some compounds it's used as a motivation tool to
encourage you to scam better and then other comp sounds it's used more as a
sadistic type of punishment and so if you're not doing what you've been asked
to do or you're not any good at scamming or you're just flat out refusing we're
going to punish you until you either give in or we can't be bother punishing
you anymore and we'll sell you onto another
compound in this compounds there are different companies or it's always is
the same company within each compound there's like 30 to 40 different companies so it's run like an illicit
business park for a business park for elicit activities so you've got the compound
itself and each compound has directors that run that as a business then you
have companies that then rent that space and then within each company you have a
hierarchy so you have bosses supervisors team leaders and then you have smaller
teams that are then managed within each company you could have maybe 50 people
or you could have 250 people it depends on the size of the company some companies are spread over several
compounds they might have lots of different locations whether it's multiple locations in Myanmar or they
might have company or offices in Cambodia and Lao sometimes Dubai and
then other times they could just have one location so companies uh are open to
closed all the time so your names are harder to track some are legally registered some are not so almost like
the the company rents the office spaces and then it might rent seven rooms for their dorms and then the next company is
the next so yeah Michelle was telling me that just right here at the Tha myamar border there are around 60 compounds or
60 scam City 30 like big one and other 30 a little bit smaller and the victims
living there the total 2 years ago was 120,000 people just in this area and now
she said that they've grown immens L because they kept building they kept expanding so now probably we are talking
about 150,000 even 200,000 people victims getting human trafficked here
think about the number 150,000 to 200,000 people that right now they're
right there being forced to work and being abused that's a lot of people man depending on the compound you go to you
have access to different amenities so uh AP poloo for example uh they have gyms
they have canteens they have ktvs brothels most compounds have brothels and
ktvs um because you've got to remember you have perpetrators living in those
compounds as well so the scamming bosses supervisors sometimes they move their families in there the majority are human
trafficking victims because the compounds are locked down they want to keep them happy right so they give them
as access to as many services as they can you have to pay to use them but if you're scamming well and you're earning
money then you have money to go and spend at a brothel or go to the gym or whatever your thing
[Music] is the nationality of the bosses and
also the the victims it's a bit of a mix so generally it's China Chinese uh
scamming bosses but there are compounds who are co-owned by Taiwanese and
Chinese the majority of victims in every compound are China Chinese that have been trafficked down there are
foreigners from all over the world so you have Kenyan Ethiopian Moroccan
Indonesian Spanish South African Vietnamese Malaysian Pakistan India um
they don't really discriminate so they're just willing to take people from anywhere as long as you fulfill their
you check those [Music]
boxes the victims they get their salary every month sometimes so generally in the
beginning you're paid for the first one or two months if you're not any good at scamming you start getting Financial
penalties you might end up with nothing some companies are patient and will try and work with you and motivate you to
scam if you're not any good and you're not performing within 2 months they'll sell you to another compound or another
company right everything has a financial penalty so it's all deducted from your salary you don't reach it scamming
targets all deducted from your salary so the majority of victims don't actually do well
financially within the compounds they might get a little bit of money if they do it's used to either eat
or they send it home but I've found over the last 2 and 1 half years the majority
of victims have been paid for a couple of months and then nothing and then they're still forced to scam even though
they're getting no salary [Music]
the real Paradox of all of this is that this area is incredibly beautiful the
nature is amazing just riding around with a motorbike is such a joy but at the same time in this exact location
it's where all these dark things are happening so I'm experiencing a lot of mixed feeling of joy and sadness at the
same time of freedom while riding in this road but at the same time grief for the people stuck in those scam cities
yeah a lot of mixed emotions all right guys we made it to another spot where we can
see another scam city right in front of me that's the one oh my God they're
building also so I continued 40 minutes south following the river in the South
Direction with the myamar Tha border and I just made it to another big compound
area Michelle told me that actually here there are three compounds and now they're building even more so I can see
already in front of me there are massive construction so here it's going to become probably another Mega scam City
it's already a scam City but it's going to become probably even bigger and she told me to come up to this hill because
there is a nice view of the Myanmar and the scam City and I can already see and
it's crazy it's really crazy because this area is so beautiful man riding
around here it's incredible then you just turn and you see this crazy massive
scam cities we'll try also to fly the Drone here and see if they're not cutting the signal the
GPS I don't know if you can see because the GoPro is pretty bad with the zooming actually there is not zoom so the river
there so this is Thailand and that one is already Myanmar and this is the entire compound there they're building
like there is a massive construction area up there also they're building all around there but there there is a
compound then there is another compound and also all around there there are small houses this is all a scam
[Music]
City the crazy thing for me is to see how much they're expanding right now and
how much they're building and developing in front of me a aside from the already existing compounds and scam cities I can
see massive construction projects everywhere and this shows that the trend is growing they're actually building
more and more they're hiring more and
more from the majority of compounds yes there are some compounds now that will
not accept Ransom so once you're in you're in the ones that are really desperate to get out that don't want to
scam and don't scam well and are getting physic Ally beaten can request from
their boss to leave generally there's more beatings are involved in that so people are very scared to do that and
then their Ransom amount will be given and it's no guarantee if you pay your Ransom that they actually will release
you sometimes they'll sell you on to another company and just keep the money cuz you're dealing with criminals you're
not dealing with people that keep their word right on average how much is it around ta chong it's between like 6 to
12,000 on average it's about 8 USD at KK Park it's now between like 1,500 and
3,000 USD places like AP poloo it's anywhere from 4 to 6,000 it just depends
on where you are and it depends on whether your your boss is willing to let you
go sometimes they might say to you if you pay your Ransom and you recruit three of your friends from back home
then I'll let you go and my question to Michelle was why the government doesn't intervene why they cannot fix this
because this is such a terrible things that they're doing into thousands of people and I was wondering can Myanmar
do something about this but unfortunately the situation is not so easy and the criminals are taking
advantage of this so myanmar's in Civil War right now so there is a a b like
there is a Myanmar government but it's half would say it's not the legitimate government half would say
it's the the hunter it just depends on which side of the camp you sit on but
it's basically in Civil War so there's no one willing to take respons posibility for any of this the Myanmar
government says it's those compounds are in ethnic armed group controlled areas
so there's nothing we can do about it then you go to the ethnic armed groups and they say oh it's not our it's not
our issue we don't have any government control here so who is controlling this who is allowing all of these things to
happen within the compound itself it's controlled by the compound directors and
the crime syndicates right outside of the compound you have the ethnic armed
groups controlling those territories so you have to the compan compound pays the
ethnic armed groups okay so that's what they make there that's it everybody's on the tank right so for you to get out of
the gate of the scamming compound that's one thing but then how do you get from the gate and cross the river you have to
pay all the traffickers bringing people through Thailand they're paying the
ethnic armed groups to cross the river traffic Smugglers to across the river then from the edge of the river to the
compound is an ethnic armed group so then you're paying again everybody's paid off bgf dkba k&u they're all being
paid to smuggle people through so it might be the hierarchy saying hey we don't support human trafficking but
their people on the ground are taking money all the time so it's boosting the economy so they don't want it to finish
either but I mean Myanmar in that in the area where all the scamming compounds are it's like the perfect storm they're
just able to thrive and do whatever they like there's no governance this human trafficking and scamming it's happening
in many countries in Southeast Asia but in Myanmar the situation is very different the difference between lao and
Cambodia say Malaysia and the Philippines is you have legitimate
functional governments governing those countries the scamming centers they're not compounds their centers are within
local communities there so you would have maybe a high-rise apartment building or a casino or um maybe a
factory operating as a scamming Center and then you have Suburbia around it
they're very different to the compounds here the compounds here are in rural remote areas and they are one
self-contained City whereas within La Cambodia Malaysia Philippines you have
police who can then raid the compound you have ways to go in and rescue people
with law enforcement now many of those countries aren't actually doing that but
they have the means to be able to do that whereas in Myanmar they don't have the means to be able to do that you would need the ethnic armed groups to
actually stand up and make a stand against scamming and say hey we're not doing this exploitation anymore right
but it's too [Music]
lucrative something has to happen quickly some someone has to really stop them because it's really atrocious what
eles estão fazendo e eu sou muito grato pelo trabalho de Michelle, o que ela está fazendo, quanto esforço ela está colocando se
